Sixth Sense as a Disruptive Technology

Sixth Sense As A Disruptive Technology.

What is Sixth Sense Technology?

It is a wearable gesture interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. (Pranav Mistry, 2010).

The hardware components which comprises of a pocket projector, mirror, cell phone, and a camera are coupled in a pendant-like mobile wearable device. Both the projector and camera are connected to the mobile computing device in the user’s pocket. The projector projects information on enabling surfaces, walls, and physical objects around us to be used as interfaces while the user’s freehand gestures and physical objects use computer vision based techniques.

What is a disruptive technology?

The words disruptive technology is most closely associated with Clayton Christensen, who’s a university professor at Harvard, who has thought about this issue of how technologies evolve and develop over time. And he refers to the process or force of disruptive technologies to describe a situation where a technology may be on an evolutionary path and all of a sudden, something brand new comes into the market that meets the same functionality of that previous technology. But does it more efficiently, at lower cost, has other benefits to it, and ends up obsoleting that previous technology. (Dr. Thornburg, D (2014 video file).

Which Technology did Sixth Sense Innovation Displace?

This technology combines the functions of the cell phones, the current projectors, watches, laptops, and cameras.   However, it has not had a break into the market at a commercial level. It has a good potential taking over most of the functionality of the above named gadgets due to its convenience and versatility.  However, it is worthy to note that the current I- phones has the capability of taking pictures and recording videos, acts as a mini-computer, and provides access to various social media.

What are its’ Social Benefits?

The Sixth Sense technology makes for more efficient interactions between the users and the world around them through information which is made available by the system. It will be a better teaching and learning tool for both teachers and students. (Vivian May Pitter, 2015).  It might provide opportunities for the deaf and some handicap persons to easily interact with others the use of hand gestures.  It can be used play games among users during social events, bus, air, or train trips. And share pictures and other information in real-time. (TED India, 2009). Hand gestures also have therapeutic benefit due to the physical hand movements involved.

How long will Sixth Sense Last Before it will be Displaced?

This technology is yet to be produced at a commercial scale. I am of the opinion that it will become more available in the next five years.  I am also predicting that it will be about fifteen to twenty years before a new technology will render it obsolete.
